MANIFESTO

Balkan Beats is truly a genre within world music,  something which generated itself and will only survive in cosmopolitan culture.

CULTURE - RECYCLING

BalkanBeats Project was founded in 1993 in Berlin  by Robert Šoko [online]

More than a project, BalkanBeats is a cultural battle; by playing original or remixed versions of traditional Balkan tunes, the BalkanBeats project not only gives them a space within the world music scene and on the dance floors, but also in the memories of young people.

Dear friends & foes,

My name is Robert Šoko — imported from Bosnia, refined in Berlin.

A long time ago, when I was young, fearless, and my pockets were emptier, I started spinning Balkan records for myself and a bunch of homesick comrades. I called it “BalkanBeats” — and suddenly the whole thing grew legs, arms, and started dancing on its own.

It’s been a wild ride: glorious highs, ridiculous lows, and plenty of noise in between. I’m thankful to you, the universe, and maybe even my neighbours (who still haven’t called the cops).

Since then, the madness has gone worldwide:
I’ve dragged my Balkan circus around the globe  — more then 150 cities, over 40 countries, about 700 events, 30+ years — which is also my scientific proof that the Earth is definitely not flat (try DJ-ing on an edge, it doesn’t work).

And guess what? I’m still not done — see you on the next dance floor…  ✨
