BANDERA

2017

Stepan Bandera (1909-1959) was the leader of the OUN (Organisation of Ukrainian Nationalists), whose legacy remains as controversial as ever until today. Worshipped by some of the Ukrainian nationalists as a hero and a martyr, he is depicted by Russian media as a Hitler twin.

The BANDERA play was created as a hiphopera in collaboration with the Studio Я / Maxim Gorki Theater in Berlin. It is a part of the Myths Of Reality series, sponsored by the Senate Department for Culture and Europe.

In their theater latest production, premiered in December 2017, Berlin-based Ukrainian musician Yuriy Gurzhy and Moldova-born actress and singer Marina Frenk explore Bandera’s life in different contexts and perspectives. Gurzhy and Frenk analyse the propaganda wars and manipulations around his political heritage.

In this album, they seek to convey some of their observations and conclusions through 11 hip hop tracks produced by maestro Uroš Petković of the Shazalakazoo and BalkanBeats SoundSystem fame.
